How to show file name extensions in Windows

A file name extension is a set of characters added to the end of a file name that determine which program should open it. By default, Windows hides the extension in attempt to make the file list under the directory look clean. It's stupid. I can't agree more. Follow these steps to display these file extensions.

  • Click Start button, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization, and then click Folder Options.

  • Click View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, clear Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
