which had won only one of its last eight home games
TORONTO -- Its two points in the standings but it means much more than that to Kevin Glenn and the Calgary Stampeders. Glenn threw two first-half TD passes before leaving for precautionary reasons as injury-plagued Calgary beat the Toronto Argonauts 35-14 on Friday night in a rematch of last years Grey Cup game. The Stampeders (6-2) won despite missing veteran slotback Nik Lewis (fractured fibula), receiver Maurice Price (ankle), offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas (concussion) and running back Jon Cornish (thigh contusion). "It shows a lot about our character and how well we prepare, how we believe in each other," Glenn said. "Your star running back and receiver go down and we still have faith and confidence in the guy whos going to step up and play next. "We all believe in each other, its really a good team atmosphere and I think that carries over on the field." Glenn, starting with incumbent Drew Tate (arm) out, suffered a head injury at 1:06 of the fourth quarter after being taken down by Toronto tackle Khalif Mitchell. Glenn left as per the CFLs concussion protocol but said afterwards he was OK. "I had a little headache but its gone and I feel fine," he said. "I remembered the play and everything that happened so it was more so just a precaution. "This stuff is serious so you have to be cautious when it happens." Third-stringer Bo Levi Mitchell took over and scored on an 11-yard run at 4:04 to put Calgary ahead 29-14, set up by Jonathan Hefneys 36-yard return of Chad Owens fumble. Glenn threw second-quarter TD passes to Marquay McDaniel and Tim Hawthorne to stake Calgary to a 21-14 half-time lead after Toronto (5-3) lost starter Ricky Ray. Ray suffered a shoulder injury at 8:41 of the first and was replaced by sophomore Zach Collaros after being hit by Charleston Hughes. Ray will be evaluated Saturday. "Its tough to see your starting quarterback go down but you dont have time to feel for Ricky," Argos coach Scott Milanovich said. "Thats the job of the backup quarterback. "Its never easy to come off the bench with no reps, especially on a short week. Their guy (Mitchell) had to do the same thing." Ray completed his first five passes before a Rogers Centre gathering of 21,157, including a 19-yard TD strike to Jason Barnes at 5:10 to open the scoring. Ray, who guided Toronto past Calgary 35-22 in the 100th Grey Cup game last November at Rogers Centre, capped an eight-play, 65-yard march set up by Cleyon Laings recovery of McDaniels fumble following a 29-yard reception on the games first offensive play. Ray returned to Torontos bench in the third and wasnt wearing a shoulder harness. Ray said afterwards he didnt think he suffered a shoulder separation and was held out for precautionary reasons. Ray came in having completed 64-of-73 passes (87.7 per cent) for 851 yards and eight touchdowns over his three previous starts. He was the CFLs offensive player of the week after finishing 30-of-35 passing for 413 yards and three TDs in a 36-33 home win over Edmonton on Sunday. Collaros led Toronto past B.C. 38-12 on July 30 when Ray had a knee injury but couldnt duplicate that feat Friday, finishing 16-of-26 passing for 221 yards and an interception, the Argos first this season. "We felt we couldve won regardless of losing Ricky," said Barnes, who had five catches for 106 yards and a TD. "We have a specific package with Zach and he knows what to do. "We just couldnt extend any long drives and they outplayed us." Calgary head coach/general manager John Hufnagel had nothing but praise for his club. "We held a very high-scoring offence to 14 points, thats pretty good," he said. "I know theyre missing their starting quarterback but so are we. "Im very proud of this football team just because of what theyve had to contend with up to this point. They had full confidence if they played their game that they had a chance to win the game and thats what they did." Glenn finished 14-of-20 passing for 228 yards and the two TDs. Jonathan Williams and Matt Walter combined for 138 yards rushing in place of Cornish, the 2012 CFL rushing leader whos second this year with 749 yards. Williams, a former practice roster player, had 82 yards on 18 carries while Walter added 56 yards on 10 carries. "It was like, Jon Cornish who? Glenn said with a chuckle. "They both took advantage of opportunities. "Jon being a guy who was on the practice roster and hadnt suited up since preseason coming in here and doing the kind of things he was doing, everyone on the team had confidence in him. Now the rest of the CFL, the rest of Canada has seen what he can do." Calgary earned its fifth straight win over an East Division team and beat Toronto for the first time in six regular-season meetings. Kicker Rene Paredes booted three field goals but had his CFL record-streak end at 39 straight when he missed from 22 yards in the fourth for a single. Rene also had three converts while the other points came on two safeties. Barnes and Curtis Steele had Torontos touchdowns. Noel Prefontaine added the converts. NOTES: Toronto honoured members of the 83 Grey Cup-winning team at halftime. The victory in 1983 ended Torontos 31-year Grey Cup drought . . . . Toronto linebacker Marcus Ball was a late scratch. Linebacker Major Culbert was promoted from the practice roster to take Balls spot . . Hufnagel is the leagues longest tenured head coach, joining the Stampeders prior to the 08 season . . . Ray made his 169th career start while Glenn started his 145th career contest. Tommy McNamara Jersey . The (11-11-4) Jets are seventh in the Central Division with 26 points. Fifth place Dallas and sixth-seeded Nashville also have 26 points, but the Stars have three games in hand on Winnipeg while Nashville has two. Eirik Johansen New York City Jersey . Robredo, ranked No. 16, bounced back from an upset loss to Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the Royal Guard Open in Chile last week to down Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 25 minutes. On a day filled mostly with qualifying matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also entered the second with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, while Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance. http://www.newyorkcityteamshop.com/Authentic-Pablo-Alvarez-New-York-City-Jersey/ . Supported by three-run homers from Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos, the young right-hander went seven strong innings in the Washington Nationals 8-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Adam Nemec Jersey . Westbrook has missed 27 games since having a procedure on Dec. 27 to deal with swelling in his injured right knee — the third operation on the knee in nine months. Kwame Watson-Siriboe Jersey . Two pressure cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the April 15 race in an area packed with fans cheering the passing runners. Three people were killed and more than 260 injured, including at least 16 who lost limbs. DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings got a break, getting credit for a goal in perhaps one of the most bizarre ways in NHL history. Niklas Kronwalls shot was deflected and bounced off the protective net out of play, caromed back over the glass, and struck goalie Jonathan Quicks back to tie the game with 26.1 seconds left in regulation. Tomas Tatar scored in the shootout, and Jimmy Howard stopped all three shots he faced in the tiebreaker to lift Detroit to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. "Thats embarrassing for the league," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "It doesnt matter if we wouldve scored it or they scored it." Kronwall seemed to agree. "It shouldnt have counted," he said. "But at this stage of the game where were at in the standings, well take it." The Red Wings, who lost their two previous games 1-0, are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division and are in a logjam for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Detroit avoided getting shut out in three straight games for the first time in the regular season, and the first time since the 1945 Stanley Cup finals against Toronto. The Kings, especially defenceman Drew Doughty tried to protest Kronwalls goal, but it wasnt reviewable because none of the officials blew a whistle to stop play when the puck hit the net. "They just said they didnt see it," Doughty said. "Its unfortunate. We shouldve got two points. "Ive never seen that before, thats for sure." Los Angeles took a 2-1 lead when Jeff Carter scored off a rebound during a power play with 2:15 left in the third period. Quick and Howard -- two of the three U.S. Olympic goalies -- bumped into each other and had a heated exchange during a stoppage in play midway through the second period. "We were just discussing what we were going to do in Sochi," Howard joked. Howard roughed up Kings forward Kyle Clifford when he slid into the crease. Howard and Mike Richards then shoved each other andd were called for roughing.ddddddddddddHoward later skated toward his bench during a break, Quick stood in his way to say something, and the two had to be separated. "For him to do that, I thought it was pretty cool," said Doughty, who will play for Canada next month at the Winter Olympics. "I loved it, actually." Howard finished with 30 saves. Quick, who stopped 33 shots, shrugged off the tough-luck loss. "Season ended against Chicago, Game 5, last year," he said. "Thats tougher." Richards broke a scoreless tie at 9:06 of the second, and Henrik Zetterberg tied it 41 seconds later. The Kings went ahead on a power play, but Dwight King was penalized for holding onto the puck with 1:45 left in regulation. That proved to be costly. "They could see the puck when Dwight King covered it with his hand, but they couldnt see it when it went over the barn and came back in," Sutter said. Zetterbergs goal ended a scoreless streak that lasted 152 minutes, 21 seconds and dated to last weeks win against the Kings. The Red Wings started a season-high, five-game homestand, and they hope that is good news. Detroit, which had won only one of its last eight home games, started Saturday with an NHL-low six home victories this season. The Red Wings won for just the second time in nine shootouts. Detroit was without seven skaters who would have been in its lineup if healthy, including Pavel Datsyuk for the sixth straight game because of a lower-body injury. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said the team has players making "millions and millions," that never seem to play. NOTES: Tatar returned from a one-game absence to attend his fathers funeral and replaced Mikael Samuelsson. ... Kings D Matt Greene was scratched for a second straight game because of an upper-body injury. ... Datsyuk isnt expected to play Monday against St. Louis. ... The Kings, who had won two straight, are two games into a five-game trip. They have lost five straight at Joe Louis Arena. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
