TORONTO – They stepped out of an emptying dressing room with one common message. "We didnt get anything done here," Phil Kessel said with some emphasis. "We didnt make the playoffs and thats what we were trying to do. Were all disappointed in here." The stinging wounds of a two-month long collapse were still rather fresh for the Leafs - 13th in the East with 80 points - the befuddlement of another season gone wrong evident on locker clean-out day at the Air Canada Centre. "To be sitting here talking about where everything went wrong and how it all failed, its hard to comprehend right now," Luke Schenn stated quietly. "Its not a good feeling because we were in such a good spot. I think like everyones talked about - whether its media, fans or ourselves - no ones ever seen a freefall like this. Its frustrating for everyone. Its not a good feeling." The ground slipped out in stunning fashion. Seemingly in good position in early February, the Leafs tumbled swiftly down the Eastern Conference standings, unable to regain control of a season brimming with early optimism. "Have you seen a stretch like this?" Kessel asked rhetorically. "I dont know if anyone really has. Its been a tough go. I cant really pinpoint what happened and where it went wrong, but it went wrong and weve got things to work on. "Hopefully we can improve and be better next year." "I think thats the biggest thing weve got to take out of this year is if we have that kind of curveball thrown at us again, weve got to do a better job of handling it initially rather letting it snowball on us," Cody Franson noted. Ron Wilson paid the early price for the meltdown - replaced by Randy Carlyle in late February - with other changes surely on the docket in a critical offseason ahead. Goaltending instability stands atop the list of summer priorities for Brian Burke, with upgrades in the forward and blue-line ranks likely to be made as well. "When you dont have success and when you do not make the playoffs and give yourself an opportunity to have success, things are going to be re-evaluated," Dion Phaneuf said. "Its a bad feeling for everyone in this city," Clarke MacArthur concluded. "Were obviously pretty frustrated with how it ended." Five Points 1. Kessel revealed a left wrist injury which had been plaguing him for the final weeks of the season. He required a cortisone shot at one point, but will not require surgery. The issue will keep him out of the World Hockey Championship next month. 2. Sidelined for the final two weeks of the regular season with a suspected flare-up of past concussion issues, James Reimer indicated that the issue was actually neck-related. The 24-year-old visited with a neck specialist this past weekend in Montreal. "It was actually outstanding news for me," he said. "I have absolutely no problems going forward for next year, for the rest of my career, it kind of almost wiped the slate clean really." Reimer missed 23 games earlier in the year with a suspected concussion, unsure if that injury was also neck-related. "Unfortunately you dont know," Reimer said. "But having gotten the news I got from this last guy, theres obviously reason to believe that that wasnt a concussion as well. It was a pretty freeing weekend for me, thats for sure." 3. Struggling to rediscover his game after the injury, Reimer tried to find value in a straining second season. "Obviously it was one of the toughest years of my career you could say, but itll probably be the most valuable," he said. "I learned so many things about myself, so many things about my character and my faith, my ability to play different situations on the ice, how to respond to different types of adversity, criticism, expectations, you name it, the list is huge of all the things I learned this year. You never want to have a tough season because you always want to win, but hopefully in 15 years when I look back on my career, Ill see this as one of the most valuable years of my life." 4. Phaneufs leadership became a hot-button issue over the course of the final two months, a reality the 26-year-old accepts. "Its part of being captain of the team," he said. "I definitely accept responsibility for the way that this season has ended. I take that upon myself that Im not happy with the way things have gone, but weve got to move forward. Its a new year next year and thats the way that were going to handle it because whats done is done. We have to learn from it. Were definitely disappointed, but we have to move forward." 5. MacArthur took at least one lesson from the remains of the 2011-2012 season. "It just shows you that this is a tough league and you cant let your foot off the gas," he said. "And if you have a leak, youve got to fix it right away because one thing can lead to the next. That happened here. You look at what you need for points to get in the playoffs; youve got to be 10-15 games above. 500 and for that to happen, youve got to be a consistent hockey team." David Krejci Jersey .Cueto allowed one run over eight innings, and Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco hit back-to-back homers on Tuesday night, sending the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 victory that pushed the Milwaukee Brewers to the verge elimination from wild card contention. The team didnt release any details on the contract. David Krejci Bruins Jersey . Mets manager Terry Collins said Sunday he is promoting setup man Kyle Farnsworth to the ninth-inning role in place of struggling right-hander Jose Valverde, who has given up four home runs in his last three outings. Jakub Zboril Jersey . Bennett, the first-overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, finished with 13 points, a game-high 14 rebounds and two assists. Considering how ugly the previous week was for Indianapolis, the Colts needed tunnel vision toward Monday night.Following an awful performance in a loss to Pittsburgh, the Colts beat the New York Giants 40-24 behind Andrew Lucks four touchdown passes and an improved performance by a defence that kept Eli Manning off balance. With his franchise-record seventh consecutive 300-yard game, Luck led the Colts (6-3) to a lopsided win one week after a 51-34 loss to Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. Unlike the way Roethlisberger toyed with their defence in that game, the Colts didnt let Manning get going in handing New York (3-5) its third straight defeat. It was great to get back in the win column after a tough one last week, Luck said.Luck hit Coby Fleener for a 32-yard TD in the first half. He had scoring throws of 31 yards to T.Y. Hilton, 40 yards to Reggie Wayne and 2 yards to Dwayne Allen in the third period.Adam Vinatieri added four field goals and is perfect on 20 tries this year.It was the eighth time this season that Luck had thrown for more than 300 yards and the 17th time in his three pro seasons. He was 25 for 46 for 354 yards, helping the Colts head into their bye with a two-game lead on Houston on the AFC South.Reggie spoke to it last night, Luck said. Hes had only one or two, but he said losses before bye weeks stink. So do defeats like the one the Steelers laid on Indy. The quick remedy: Win the next time out.We got that bad taste out of our mouths, the way we lost that last game, coach Chuck Pagano said. Its awesome.Wayne, who broke down in tears during the national anthem, surpassed James Lofton for career yards receiving and has 14,070 in his 14-season career.Im just blessed to be out there, Wayne said. Its an emotional game, man, and sometimes it comes out. It was a prime-time game, and an opportunity to turn things around a little bit.An old wise guy once told me you shouldnt hold back your tears. Tonight was a night with the tears.Giants first-round pick Odell Beckham Jr. had 156 yards on eight receptions, by far his best game. Manning threw for 359 yards and two TDs, but most of that came with the game decided.Luck seemed to look for Fleener on every pass in the first half. That well-established combination — they played together at Stanford before joining the Colts in 2012 — paid off on consecutive passes for the games first touchdown. But the Colts probably caught a break on one of those plays.dddddddddddd Fleener was awarded a 21-yard gain to the New York 32, although video replays showed he dropped the ball. Giants coach Tom Coughlin threw the challenge flag too late, seconds before Fleener was uncovered down the right side for the touchdown. We saw the coaches gathering on the sideline and we didnt know if he was trying to challenge it or not, safety Antrel Rolle said. And you know as a defence we have to get lined up and get a call. No one got lined up ... we failed to do so as an entire unit. It was one of those plays that costs you. Also costly for the Giants were drops by receivers, an inability to sustain a ground game, and enough pressure against Manning to force long or high throws that had no chance to be caught. Indy led 16-3 at the half thanks to Fleeners TD and field goals of 48, 31 and 48 yards by Vinatieri, who added a 43-yarder in the fourth quarter. The Colts held the Giants to 143 yards in the opening half, and then staged an 84-yard drive to Hiltons TD on the first series of the third quarter.New York matched that drive to finally get into the end zone. Beckham got loose for a 59-yard gain on a pass from Manning, and then Andre Williams broke two tackles for a 24-yard reception. Williams surged in from the 1 to make it 23-10.Luck simply picked New York apart on the next series to go over 300 yards in the air once again. He beat a blitz to hit former Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw for 22 yards, did the same to hit Fleener for 11 on third down, and then connected with Wayne on a 40-yard play down the left sideline.Rookie Jonathan Newsomes sack of Manning three plays later knocked the ball loose and safety Sergio Brown returned it 28 yards to the Giants 4. Luck got his fourth TD pass on a 2-yarder to an uncovered Allen. That score sent many of the fans to the exits, about the only satisfaction they received being a halftime ceremony when former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan received his Hall of Fame ring.New York got a pair of late scores on Larry Donnells 5-yard reception and rookie Corey Washingtons 1-yard catch for his first career TD.NOTES: New York lost cornerback Prince Amukamara (torn biceps), probably for the rest of the season, and rookie guard Weston Richburg (ankle). ... Indy held the Giants to 89 yards rushing, while Bradshaw, in his return to the Meadowlands, averaged 7.1 yards a carry, gaining 50, and also had three catches for 29 yards.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL wholesale jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys china jerseys from china nfl jerseys cheap authentic cheap jerseys ' ' ' |
