Lions are also preparing for Justin |
LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Tyler Toffoli and backup goaltender Ben Scrivens have made enormous contributions lately for the Los Angeles Kings, whose depth has been tested by numerous injuries. Toffoli had two goals Monday night, Jarret Stoll also scored and Scrivens made 25 saves in a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Toffoli, a 21-year-old centre who was taken in the second round of the 2010 draft, has six goals -- four have been game-winners -- and 11 points in 14 games since he was recalled from the minors on Nov. 2. His only other two-goal game in the NHL was on Nov. 9 at Staples Center in a 5-1 win over Vancouver. Toffoli made his NHL debut late last season and opened some eyes with his stellar play during the playoffs with two goals, four assists and a plus-5 rating in 12 games. "It definitely helped, getting that experience last year, especially in the playoffs," Toffoli said. "Its not easy stepping into the playoffs -- and being able to get the opportunity to do that, I definitely learned a lot." Scrivens, who has performed brilliantly in place of the injured Jonathan Quick, was heading toward his fourth shutout of the season when Kevin Shattenkirk and Vladimir Tarasenko scored in the final 5:54. Shattenkirks goal came 6 seconds after the Kings killed off a power play caused by Colin Frasers slashing penalty. "We showed character in the third by pushing back a little bit," Blues captain David Backes said. "But at some point, we need to learn our lesson that if you give good teams leads, its a heck of an uphill climb to try to get back in the game." Scrivens has given up fewer than three goals in each of his last 10 starts and has posted two shutouts since Quick went on injured reserve with a groin strain on Nov. 12 at Buffalo. "I feel pretty good. I dont feel fatigued right now," he said. "I know when Quickie will be back, or when hes scheduled to be back, so Ive got to make sure I get my time when I can." Los Angeles has allowed fewer than three goals in a franchise-record 13 consecutive games. The streak includes a pair of 3-2 shootout losses to Buffalo and San Jose. "They force you. Theyre a physical, hard-checking team. But we have to have a better reaction than we did," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "They took it to us. We revved it up halfway through the hockey game, but you cant play like that." Jaroslav Halak made 20 saves for the Blues, who have lost consecutive games in regulation for the first time this season following their 6-3 defeat at San Jose on Friday. Halak had allowed just five goals in his previous five starts after getting pulled with a 3-0 deficit in the first period of a 4-1 loss at Washington on Nov. 17. The Kings, who hadnt had a first-period goal in any of their previous four home games -- all losses -- opened the scoring at the 10:38 mark. Stoll got the puck from Justin Williams near the top of the left circle and took a 40-foot wrist shot that glanced off defenceman Barret Jackmans leg and past Halak with Dustin Brown screening the goalie. Toffoli made it 2-0 at 16:13 of the period, beating Halak from short range after Drew Doughtys long snap shot from the high slot deflected off Toffolis stick and Halaks right shoulder before hitting the crossbar. He gave the Kings a three-goal cushion at 5:48 of the second, scoring from the low slot after Willie Mitchells wrist shot from the left point caromed off teammate Mike Richards. "We tried to approach this one with maybe a little bit more focus and attention to detail," Scrivens said. "We obviously know theyve got an extremely potent power play, so you can only give them so many chances because theyre going to find a way to bury one." NOTES: St. Louis has yet to be shut out this season. ... The Kings eliminated the Blues from the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons. In 2012, they beat St. Louis in the second round on the way to their first Stanley Cup title. The Blues, who entered the NHL with the Kings in the 1967 expansion, are still looking for their first Cup. ... Brown has been held to a goal and an assist in his last 13 games. ... The Kings are 8-0-0 when leading after two periods, and havent allowed a first-period goal in their last seven games at Staples Center. ... Los Angeles is 0 for 20 on the power play over its last six games. Tony Jefferson Womens Jersey . -- The Washington Redskins have picked up the fifth-year option on linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, keeping him under club control through the 2015 season.SURREY, B.C. -- B.C. Lions quarterback Thomas DeMarco is looking forward to taking centre stage again Friday against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers -- but hes not promising an encore grand performance in his second CFL start. "I have one game under my belt," said DeMarco after B.C.s last full practice Wednesday. "Im not a veteran. Theres certain things I still have to get used to but, having the success of last game and building off of that, Im hoping to keep it going." DeMarco, a second-year pro who is filling in for injured starter Travis Lulay (shoulder), led the Lions to a last-play 24-22 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina last weekend. The 24-year-old was calm under pressure as he led the Lions down field and completed a third-and-long pass to set up Paul McCallums winning field goal. But DeMarco is not getting too excited about his press clippings. "The biggest thing is, in a short week, you just got to take a few things you wanna work on that were going to do in this game -- and make sure that you limit your mistakes quickly and have a very keen sense to focusing on this game," he said. "So right now, that last game I had, its over with, done with, and now Im focused on Winnipeg." If the Lions (8-4) can beat the Bombers (2-10) for a second time this season, they will gain a share of first place in the West Division, at least temporarily, with the Calgary Stampeders. DeMarco is starting to feel more comfortable with B.C.s offence after taking the starters reps in practice this week. "The more accustomed that I get to running the show and making sure that I have those reps, its only going to get better from here," he said. Coach Mike Benevides tried to get DeMarco and the rest of his team accustomed to playing in Winnipegs new stadium by pumping in loud music during practice. The quarterback handled the hostile environs in Regina, save for some first-half troubles, without a glaring amount of difficulty. He is expecting another rowdy crowd in the Manitoba capital. "I thought we did well with that (crowd in Regina)," he said. "Its going to be a passionate crowd, just like it was in Saskatchewan. We love playing in front of them. We like the excitement thats going to happen. Were going to do the same thing (a silent count) we did in Saskatchewan. We had a pretty good sense of how to communicate, and I think we should be fine." But he suggested his unspoken communication with receivers is still a work in progress. He could also have to get used to some receivers in different roles. Paris Jackson is slated to go in at wide receiver as Marco Iannuzzi deals with a leg injury suffered on a key late punt return against the Roughriders. Manny Arceneaux, who missed the game in Saskatchewan, is also questionable after aggravating a groin injury late in practice Wednesday. But Benevides believes DeMarco, who was never drafted in the NFL and neeeded six pro tryouts, the last with B.ddddddddddddC. in adverse weather in the Washington, D.C., area, to get a contract, can shine again. Benevides lauded DeMarco for his efforts in last weekends win over Saskatchewan and a strong relief appearance in place of the injured Lulay in a victory over Montreal a week earlier. "It hasnt surprised me, because Ive seen Thomas always come through when hes been challenged," said Benevides. "Any time any quarterback can do what he did in that environment with 38 seconds left, (its) tremendously impressive. The last two games hes been in, hes been giving us a chance to really protect the football, and Im looking for him to continue to grow, because with more repetitions and success in games, the more confidence comes along." DeMarco, an Old Dominion product, has competed 24-of-44 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns this season. He has yet to thrown an interception in his brief CFL career. Benevides said the young signal-caller has not let the added pressure of being a starter get to him. "Thomas has got an outstanding level of confidence," said Benevides. "He also has a quirky personality. He kind of lets (things) roll off his back, and hes got a tremendous sense of humour." But a flu bug within the team has not been a laughing matter. Backup quarterback Buck Pierce, who is slated to return to Winnipeg after a trade earlier this month, was sick Wednesday and stayed away from practice. "Its the first time Ive taken this many reps since training camp," said backup QB Joey Elliott. "So it was good to actually get back in there." Pierce is still slated to travel with the team Thursday. But Elliott, who was released by the Bombers after last season, is making sure that he is prepared just in case. "If Buck is down, Ill be ready to go," said Elliott. "But with it just a basic cold, Buck should be ready to go, and I know hes really excited to be heading back to Winnipeg." Max Hall is slated to get the call for Winnipeg, which has had many struggles at the quarterback position this season. But theGoltz, who started against them at B.C. Place in August. Benevides said the team has studied Hall mostly, because he has seen most of the action between the two. But nickleback Korey Banks said it does not matter which quarterback they face. "Were past that now," said Banks. "Were into the point now where were going to prepare for ourselves. ... If were on our Ps and Qs, were gonna win." Notes: The Lions will head straight to Winnipegs new stadium to check it out after arriving Thursday. ... Special teams player Tim Cronk will get into the lineup as a result of Stu Foords knee injury suffered in Saskatchewan. ... B.C. defensive back Dante Marsh is questionable after leaving practice early with an injury that Benevides didnt have details on. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' ' |
