A file name extension is a set of characters added to the end of a file name that determine which program should open it. By default, Windows hides the extension in attempt to make the file list under the directory look clean. It's stupid. I can't agree more. Follow these steps to display these file extensions.
Click Start button, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization, and then click Folder Options.
Click View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, clear Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
